The Magic One
When I was in Hollywood in the early 1980's I seemed to be a magnet for the crazy people. They would approach me from nowhere and say things like. "you're the one." I always thought that was a great mystery to tell someone that they were special in an unknown way and that they would have to discover how they were special.
Years after I'd already written this into the book, virtually the same thing happens in a movie called "The Fisher King." Of course I was amused by the old saying "great minds think alike."
The original title of the book was THE MAGIC ONE, based upon this conversation. However, I polled a newsgroup and discovered that most thought it would be a fantasy book because of the title. So I changed it to the current title and worked it into the dialogue as well.
